HOT OFF THE PRESS:

SPRING is in the air & the Calendar is filling!

First, I want to wish my wonderful clients (past, present and future) and all who visit, a very Happy SPRING! (Meteorological Spring) The Booking Calendar is filling quickly as we get closer to the Spring Run and the weather warms!

Winter was, once again - pretty uneventful, regarding snowfall, but we did have our fair share of arctic air masses keep us pretty darn cold this winter. Essentially, all of January and February was below freezing. One positive we can take away from this winter was the lack of snowfall and “overall” dry weather we experienced, which can be beneficial to the estuaries and salinity of Long Island Sound, because it is surrounded by rivers. That being said, how this impacts the upcoming Fishing season remains to be seen. Again, winter - overall was cold, but we were pretty much completely spared with regards to storms and Nor’easters, which should bode well with our spring - striped bass run! As I write this, during the second week of March - the cool/dry pattern has persisted into mid March. Although, this may not be the best case scenario for fresh water anglers, this does tend to coincide with a good spring - striped bass run in Long Island Sound. The salinity, should be above average, which never hurts from the lack of rainfall, the water temps are running slightly below normal, which could very well play a role in keeping the larger striped bass, local - longer as we head into the hot, summer months. Bass like the water on the cooler side, in the 60s. It not only keeps them, local for longer but keeps them aggressively feeding and higher in the water column, providing my die hard - anglers great opportunities at catching HUGE Striped Bass and / or Bluefish on a Fly Rod, artificially with a spinning rod, or even BOTH in the same day!

Striped Bass (post spawn) are already making their way out of the Chesapeake Bay, as we speak and starting to point their noses, north. The smaller, juvenile fish are usually the first to do this and should be here by the beginning of April! As we get into May, June, and lasting through July, the larger striped bass, bluefish (among other predators) join the trip, north and they are ALL focused on one fish. The Menhaden, also called a Bunker and, or pogie - depending on your location. Sand Eels, squid, herring and Mackerel are also a prime food source during the spring and summer months, but the health of the menhaden population, plays the most crucial role in our marine - ecosystem in the Northeastern United States. Cheers to an unforgettable season!
