The 2025 Fishing Season is in FULL SWING!

First, I want to wish my wonderful clients (past, present and future) and all who visit, a very Happy SUMMER!

Fishing Report: 8/5/2025

*Happy August! Hard tails are en route’

DON’T WATCH FROM THE COUCH!

This past week was the hottest weather of the summer, keeping many anglers inside, in the air conditioning instead of on the water and boats. Last week, I was booked every day, and the fishing was great most days, but this week, on the other hand was very slow with only a hand full of trips. During the very beginning of the week as the heat was starting to really set in, the tides lined up great early in the mornings and late in the afternoons. Early week - I did have some big stripers hangin out on the deeper reefs and pieces of structure and we were able to stick a few big mid summer bass on the bunker spoons. unfortunately, that wasn’t the only thing we stuck this week as I stuck a 200 - 300 lb seal on the bottom in the middle of Long Island Sound in 70’+ of water. She came to the surface for air and then sounded back to the bottom a hand full of times, before finally breaking the clip. Hopefully she shakes the flutter spoon - sooner, rather than later. Obviously, the fishing that particular day wasn’t very good, but I was able to find a bunch of school size to just over keeper size bass feeding on very small bay anchovies in the rips around the shoals, under the terns. Flys have been getting more attention during these situation more so than smaller spooks and top water lures on the spinning rods. Soft plastics are usually the ticket when the fish are picky and keyed into a very small food source, like this. I have found these top water situations, along with bigger fish around the herring gulls - feeding on bunker during just about all parts of the day, despite the heat, but early mornings and I mean EARLY (5-6am) and late afternoons / nights definitely give you your best shot at the bigger fish as the water temps approach the maximum for the year. Also, the fish are feeding only during specific tides. This makes or breaks the day.

With the water temps approaching the mid to upper 70s, we start to see our exotic southern visitors like cow nose sting rays, sea turtles, Spanish mackerel, and even Atlantic bonito. There have been both Spanish mackerel and bonito confirmed to our east in Rhode Island, the calendar just hit August so I don’t think it will be very long until we start to see Spanish mackerel, locally! These are very fun on light tackle and fly rod, and also very tasty. Going forward through Labor Day and fall, the possibility of running into Spanish mackerel and/or Atlantic Bonito will be in the cards which only adds to the excitement. Last season was the best season I have ever witnessed in Long Island Sound, regarding Bonito. Could it be the start of a new trend? Only time will tell.

This coming week, the weather seems to cool off which should help the local striper fishing. I have a few trips booked for the week so far, but I really should be booked more. If you’re concerned about timing and the tide, give me a call before booking so I can give you the best opportunity, possible! I have a very strong feeling about this week and the striper fishing with the cooler conditions, expected. Give me a call or visit the website to easily Book a trip!
